When you are really interested in music i.e. your interest isn’t just to a level of listening on latest gadgets, you sure would take time in choosing a musical instrument. Whether you enter a huge musical store full of a wide variety of any particular instrument or a tiny corner shop having a display for beginners, your curiosity to know the details might consume hours as you pick one instrument after another! Take for example a guitarist when she/he wants to go in for a new guitar; the choice is not going to be easy as the array of guitars on display strike a musical note in them and makes them devote more and more time examining the features of each piece. Though the look of a gibson les paul guitar does attract attention, it’s not the end all and be all as the criterion for selection.

A glance into the newspapers these days is hardly an exercise in fun, and I’m not just bemoaning the quality of modern day cartoon series (seriously Nemi, go home). It would seem that unless you have a High yield savings account, you probably can’t have fun anymore. But this is actually less true than ever.  The fact is, DVDs are dirt cheap, video games likewise. And despite the best efforts of the music industries, subscription based services like Spotify can get you almost the entire history of music for less than the price of a couple of pints. Sure, video games consoles and other pieces of high tech kit are less affordable, but the bargains are piling up.

It's common to attend a concert or watch a DVD and see somebody strumming a guitar, in fact that is what the majority of guitarists concentrate on which is strumming chords. However, playing chords are only one part of a musical presentation if the artist stopped singing it would impossible to know which tune they were performing.

On the other hand some guitarists specialize in playing melody or single string notes usually played directly from the written sheet music, while this is the best option to clearly state the melody unless there is a rhythm guitar accompaniment the performance can be quite empty and dull.

The third option is to combine both the melody and rhythm parts of a composition into a solo guitar chord which is the melody style, whereby the guitarist plays all the parts of the composition without any need of other musicians to present a satisfactory performance.

If you're going to learn to play guitar solo pieces then there will inevitably come a time when you'll need to learn guitar tabs. Unfortunately this can be one of the most frustrating experiences in learning guitar, and is one that puts many people off.

Learn to play the single note melody, take great care to learn the melody correctly, if you can read standard sheet music it is a good idea to learn the melody exactly as it is stated in the written score; you can always embellish the melody later, the trick is to make certain you are playing the correct melody before you start improvising on the it.

Play the melody an octave higher than the written piano score. Most guitarists don't realize that the guitar sounds one octave lower than written, therefore in order for the melody to cut through and not get tangled up with the chords it's essential that you play the melody one octave higher, playing on the first or second strings will give you the best results.

Strum the chord on the first beat of each bar making certain the melody note is the highest note of the chord, in most instances the melody will be a note that already exists in the chord the trick is to make sure that the melody note is not lost amongst the other chord notes; sometimes you may have to slightly alter the chord shape to accommodate a melody note that is not contained in the chord.

Take your time working on only four to six melody notes at a time, aim for precision and make sure to really bring the melody out in your playing, like everything it takes practice, patience and perseverance but the result is well worth the effort.

Some people who have been learning to play the guitar on their own or with friends assume they'll be able to pick up guitar music notation fairly easily, simply because they can already play a number of popular chords. Other people may have learned to play guitar having already learned to play another instrument such as the piano or the trumpet. In these cases they assume that their knowledge and understanding of reading standard notation will simply be applied to guitar music in a fairly straightforward way.
